Why have my BBC channels disappeared in Spain?

The BBC SD channels have been switched off. Here's what changed, why BBC HD still works in the Almanzora Valley, and how to get your channels back.

A modern one-box TV system with recording and on-demand

If you’ve reached for the remote and found your BBC channels gone, you’re not alone — it’s the question I get asked most this year across the Almanzora Valley. The good news: it’s almost always an easy fix, and you don’t need to lose your British telly.

What actually changed

The BBC has switched off its standard-definition (SD) satellite channels. Those are the ones many older boxes tuned into by default. Only the BBC HD regional channels remain on satellite now.

Here in our corner of Almería, those HD channels are still perfectly receivable — the footprint reaches us fine. So the picture hasn’t gone for good; your box is simply looking in the wrong place.

Why your box went blank

Most receivers stored the old SD channel numbers. When the BBC pulled the plug on them, the box kept pointing at a signal that no longer exists — hence the black screen or “no signal” message. It’s not your dish, and it’s usually not a fault.

The quick fixes

Depending on your equipment, one of these usually sorts it:

  • A re-tune. Many boxes just need a fresh channel scan to pick up the HD versions.
  • A software tweak. Some older receivers need a small settings change to sit them on the right transponder.
  • A box that’s simply past it. If your receiver is a decade old, it may not handle the current line-up cleanly. That’s the moment to look at a modern setup.

If your picture is breaking up rather than gone entirely, that’s a different issue — often dish alignment or a tired LNB in the summer heat. Either way, give me a call before you spend money on a replacement you might not need.

While you’re at it: TV the way it should be

A lot of people take the BBC change as the nudge to upgrade to a modern one-box system. It sits alongside your dish (or replaces it) and gives you the catch-up services you actually use — BBC iPlayer, ITV X, Channel 4, My5 and UKTV — plus recording, pausing and box sets. No more chasing channel numbers that keep moving.

The short version

  • Your BBC channels aren’t gone — the SD ones were switched off, and BBC HD still reaches the valley.
  • It’s usually a re-tune or a small tweak, not a new dish.
  • If your box is old, a modern one-box system future-proofs you and adds all the catch-up apps.
